The Chairman of Maurid Group of Schools, Dr Godwin Umontuen has expressed worry over lack of infrastructures and development in the sports sector in Akwa Ibom State.
He said, the decay has hindered effective sports promotion and development, and called for the establishment of sports academy in the 10 Federal Constituencies in the state.
Umontuen who is a Football Enthusiast and Philanthropist decried lack of activities in other sports, describing it as worrisome.
Maurid Group of Schools comprises, Maurid Polythenic, Maurid College of Nursing Science in Mbiaso in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, Maurid School of Nursing in Abia State as well as Maurid schools in the primary and secondary levels.
He stated this while exchanging views with newsmen in his country home,ONNA after playing host to Coastal All Stars, ONNA last Saturday.
According to him, the stadia we have in the state are only for football while other sports like athletics, basketball, volleyball, tennis and others have not been developed because of lack of facilities.
He opined that provision of sporting facilities should be given prompt attention by the state government.
He believed that government and private citizens in the state should do more in sports sector so as to help discover young talents, curb negative vices in the society, such as criminality, thuggery, drug abuse among others especially in the higher institutions in the state
The Maurid Group of Schools boss noted the disconnect between the old players and the new generation and believed that experienced sports men and women should also be engaged in other to help develop sports in the state.
He added, ” there is actually a disconnect between the old players and the new ones in the state and the young ones have not been able to meet their target because of the disconnect”.
Umontuen who is a Patron of Coastal All Stars assured that he will do his best to develop the young players within and outside, promising continuous support to Coastal All Stars to remain strong.
In his comment, the President of Coastal All Stars, Engr Henshaw Isong commended Dr Umontuen for being their pillar and promised that they will continue to advice and guide the young ones to become great footballers in future.
