President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to two British-Nigerians, Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson, on their groundbreaking elections as mayors in London boroughs, praising their achievements as emblematic of Nigeria’s global excellence.

In a message shared via X (formerly Twitter) by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu lauded the duo for their commitment to public service and for upholding values that reflect positively on Nigeria.

Bright, aged 29, was sworn in as the Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, becoming the youngest to ever hold the position in the borough’s history. Her elevation follows seven years of community service and a landmark achievement in 2018, when she became the borough’s youngest Labour councillor at 22.

Jason Jackson, meanwhile, made history as the first Nigerian-born Mayor of Islington since the borough’s founding in 1900. First elected as a councillor in 2022, Jackson swiftly rose through the ranks, serving as Chair of Islington’s Homes and Communities Committee by 2023.

President Tinubu commended the mayors for “sustaining the legacy of good works by Nigerians in the diaspora,” and praised their representation of Nigerian values such as “honesty, integrity, hard work, and commitment to the well-being of others.”

He added, “On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Mayors Opeyemi Bright and Jason Jackson. I urge you to continue giving your best in your new roles… I have every confidence in your abilities and look forward to the positive impact you will make in your respective boroughs.”

The President noted that their stories would serve as inspiration to young people at home and abroad, encouraging them to pursue excellence and engage in meaningful public service.
