The Ogun State chapter of Nigeria Union of Pensioners has lauded Governor Dapo Abiodun for the approval and release of N6.7bn to pay the backlog of gratuities for pensioners in the state.

The Chairman of the union, Waheed Oloyede, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Oloyede said while N3.2bn is for the government’s retirees, the balance of N3.5bn is to take care of the retired local government workers.

The union said, “Your Excellency, this gesture demonstrates your commitment to the welfare of the senior citizens whose entitlements have been denied over the years.

“We are deeply grateful for the milk of godly kindness and generosity in you towards us, the elderly.

“No doubt, the payment of the gratuities will bring great relief and succour to many individuals and families.”

The union equally appreciated the governor for prompt and timely payment of monthly pensions, adding that this had helped its members to access sustainable health services and other welfare packages.

“We also express immense appreciation for the various palliatives and subsidies directed towards us pensioners in the recent past to cushion the effects of the present harsh economic realities,” the statement added.

The union, however, appealed to the governor for the consequential increase in pensions, in line with the 2019 Federal Government circular.

Oloyede said Abiodun, in July 2022, directed a committee to be set up to look into the issue of consequential adjustment, adding that to date, nothing had been done.

The union said the implementation of the consequential adjustments would help members to have the financial resources to withstand the harsh economic realities.
