The first private College of Nursing Sciences in Akwa Ibom State, Maurid College of Nursing Sciences, celebrated a historic milestone as it matriculated its first set of students.
The event, which also saw the commissioning of a new classroom block, was attended by prominent figures in society which took place last weekend at the college located in Mbiaso, Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.
Addressing the mammoth crowd, the Chairman, Maurid Group of Schools,Dr. Godwin Umontuen expressed optimism and joy over the momentous occasion, referring to the establishment of the institution as a “vision come true.” He emphasized that the journey to founding the college had been one of dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment from various stakeholders.
The educationist, extended heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the vision and commended Rt. Hon. Uyime Idem, Federal House Member representing Oruk Anam/Ukanafun Federal Constituency, for his significant role in supporting the college. He praised Hon. Idem for building and donating the new classroom block, describing it as a cornerstone for the college’s academic pursuits.
The Chairman further appreciated Hon. Idem for his consistent support, describing him as a “promise keeper” and a dedicated member of the Maurid Schools family.
He congratulated the matriculating students, urging them to take their studies seriously. “Today, we welcome our pioneer students. Congratulations. You are the trailblazers of this institution. Your decision to pursue a career in nursing and midwifery is commendable. You stand at the threshold of a noble profession that is not only a vocation but a calling,” he said.
“As future nurses, you will play a vital role in the health and well-being of our communities. Embrace this opportunity with passion and dedication, for the journey ahead will be both challenging and rewarding,” Dr. Umontuen added.
Rt. Hon. Uyime Idem, National Assembly member for Oruk Anam/Ukanafun Federal Constituency, and Chairman of the occasion, also spoke at the event. He expressed his gratitude to Dr. Godwin Umontuen for his massive investment, which he said reflects deep love for the country.
He described the investment as a selfless effort aimed at training and equipping nurses who will provide essential healthcare services to humanity. He also commended the Nurses and Midwifery Council of Nigeria for approving the establishment of the college.
The lawmaker congratulated the matriculating students and urged them to remain committed to their studies, striving for excellence. He also encouraged them to shun cultism and other social vices, always putting God first in their academics.
In her remarks, Mrs. Bernette Bassey, Provost of the institution, expressed gratitude to God for the successful establishment of the first private College of Nursing Sciences in Akwa Ibom State. She emphasized that the college is unique, offering meticulous training in nursing and midwifery to ensure that students acquire the necessary knowledge and technical skills to practice in a safe, effective, holistic, and competent manner.
“Our curriculum is tailored in line with the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and the National Board for Technical Education. This will enable our graduates to become entrepreneurial nurses and midwives who will serve Nigerians with pride, be avoiding the brain drain syndrome that often leads to the loss of talented professionals,” Mrs. Bassey concludes
