The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has appealed to motorists to refrain from driving, or reduce speed during heavy rainfall to minimise accidents, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports.
Mr. Wasiu Ogunmefun, the Sango-Ota Unit Commander of FRSC, made the appeal while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ota.
Ogunmefun identified excessive speeding as one of the risk factors contributing to accidents as well as unnecessary loss of lives.
“We are appealing to motorists to maintain their vehicles by ensuring that their brake lights, lighting system and wipers are working well.
“In addition, drivers of any broken down vehicles should use caution signs at enough distance to give a warning to oncoming vehicles,” he said.
The unit commander emphasized the need for motorists to park in a safer place during heavy rainfall because of poor visibility which sometimes results in accidents.
He said that it was wrong to start looking for a mechanic when vehicles break down instead of towing them to remove the obstruction that may cause crashes from the road.
Ogunmefun reiterated the FRSC ‘s commitment to ensuring safety of lives and property during, before and after the rainy season.
Ogunmefun also enjoined them to embrace defensive driving during the rainy season to prevent accidents.
The rainy season sets in April and ends October across the country.
