The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff.
The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report presented by the Senate Committee on Army, chaired by Abdulaziz Yar’adua, during Tuesday’s plenary session.
President Bola Tinubu, in a letter dated November 22, 2024, had requested the Senate’s approval of Oluyede’s appointment in accordance with Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act.
Oluyede, who had been serving as Acting Chief of Army Staff since October 30 following the illness and subsequent death of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja on November 5, 2024, now assumes the position substantively.
A member of the 39th Regular Course, Oluyede was previously the 56th Commander of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992 (effective from 1987), he rose to the rank of Major-General in September 2020.
Over his career, Oluyede has held several command and staff positions, including Platoon Commander, Adjutant at 65 Battalion, Company Commander at 177 Guards Battalion, and Staff Officer in the Guards Brigade.
He also served as the Commandant of the Amphibious Training School and commanded the 27 Task Force Brigade during Operation HADIN KAI in the North East.
His operational experience spans international and local missions, including the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group Mission in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and counter-terrorism operations in Nigeria’s North East.
In recognition of his service, Oluyede has received numerous military honours, including the Corps Medal of Honour, Grand Service Star, Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award, and various field command and training medals.
He is also a graduate of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies.
Oluyede is married and blessed with three children.
