The Akwa Ibom State Football Association (AKSFA) has congratulated the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, on his recent election as the 1st Vice President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B.

Alhaji Gusau was elected to the position on Friday, November 22, 2024, during the CAF African Schools Football Championship in Niamey, Niger Republic. The event also served as the qualifying tournament for the WAFU B zone, which includes seven countries: Nigeria, Togo, Benin Republic, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Niger Republic, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Gusau, who took over as NFF President in September 2022, has been instrumental in shaping football governance in Nigeria. He has also held various high-ranking roles within continental football, including a position on the Organizing Committee for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

In a statement, the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Football Association, Mr. Samuel Umoh, expressed his pride in Gusau’s election and his confidence in the NFF President’s ability to deliver in his new role.

Mr. Umoh said: “This is a well-deserved victory for Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau. His leadership skills and extensive experience in football administration have already made a significant impact on the development of the game in Nigeria and beyond. We are confident that he will excel as the 1st Vice President of WAFU B and take on even more responsibilities in the years to come.”

Alhaji Gusau’s recent visit to Uyo, where he honoured an invitation by the Akwa Ibom State Football Association to open a one-day “Football Governance and Leadership” seminar, was another example of his commitment to improving football at all levels.
