The Nigerian House of Representatives has instructed the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to reverse the recent electricity tariff increase for Band A customers.
This directive came on Tuesday following the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Power, which recommended reverting to the previous tariff due to the financial strain the new rate imposes on Nigerians.
NERC had announced a tariff hike, raising the cost for Band A customers to N225 per kilowatt. However, the House has resolved to investigate this increase further.
Presenting the report, Victor Nwokolo, Chairman of the Committee on Power, emphasized that the new tariff is unaffordable for many Nigerians.
The Committee’s recommendations were adopted by the Committee of the Whole and subsequently passed.
