Senator Aniekan Bassey of the Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District has identified peace and proper integration of member nations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as the panacea for regional growth and economic stability.
The Senator, who is the Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture Production Services and Rural Development, made this known on Tuesday while interacting with newsmen shortly after the inaugural plenary session of the Sixth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja.
“As a member of the ECOWAS Parliament, I have seen the challenges militating against the region. I believe that the most important thing is peace, sub-regional integration, and sub-regional unification. We will work towards achieving that as a parliament because our economic growth and stability are hinged on these,” he explained.
Senator Bassey also said that “with a united front, the region can increase its trade volume and tackle the security challenges as well as count its gains in the education, agriculture and health sectors.”
