The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has redeployed 60 officers of Akwa Ibom State origin from its Akwa Ibom State Command to various state commands across Nigeria, including several states in the North, in a development that has triggered complaints from affected personnel.
The redeployments were conveyed through three separate signals — 1083 AKWA-CL, 1084 AKWA-CL and 1085 AKWA — approved by NSCDC Commandant-General Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi and signed on his behalf by Musa Farouk B.K. A separate signal redeployed 19 officers from Kwara to Akwa Ibom, bringing the total movement covered by the four signals to 79 officers.
The affected Akwa Ibom personnel include officers across senior ranks such as ASCI, SC, DSC, CSC, ACC and DCC. Their new postings include Niger, Katsina, Bauchi, Jigawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kano and Yobe, among other states.
Controversy over the transfers;
Some affected officers are questioning the basis and timing of the redeployments, particularly because the signals reportedly state that the movements take immediate effect and carry no financial benefits.
Personnel quoted in reports said they were not the ones who requested the transfers and expressed concern about having to finance transportation and relocation to distant parts of the country themselves. They also raised concerns about travelling to areas affected by insecurity and the cost of accommodation and relocation.
One affected officer alleged that the redeployment originated from the administration department following the intervention of the Akwa Ibom State Commandant, Geraldine Sixtus Abetianbe. However, that allegation has not been independently established, and it should not be presented as an established fact.
Some personnel also alleged that a disproportionate number of those moved are Akwa Ibom indigenes who have spent many years in the command, describing the situation as targeted victimisation.
NSCDC confirms the transfer signals;
The Akwa Ibom Command’s spokesperson, SC Friday Ekerette, confirmed that he had seen the transfer signals emanating from NSCDC National Headquarters. He said personnel of the Corps are governed by the Public Service Rules and other applicable directives.
