The Federal Government has approved Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday in observance of this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement issued on Friday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

The minister extended his greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and the diaspora, urging them to use the occasion to reflect on the values and teachings associated with the life of the Prophet.

According to Tunji-Ojo, the celebration should encourage Nigerians to embrace virtues such as compassion, humility and service to humanity.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others.

“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” he said.

Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to make prayers for peace, unity and national cohesion a central part of the celebration.

He stressed that achieving and maintaining peace across the country required the collective efforts of all citizens.

The minister further advised Muslims and other Nigerians observing the occasion to celebrate responsibly, showing mutual respect and consideration for one another.

He wished the Muslim faithful a peaceful and fulfilling Eid ul Mawlid celebration.

Tunji-Ojo reiterated the Tinubu administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while advancing peace and stability nationwide.

He also encouraged citizens to support initiatives designed to promote national unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
