Venezuela has declared a nationwide state of emergency following two powerful earthquakes that struck the country, killing at least 164 people and leaving widespread destruction in their wake.
The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck in quick succession on Wednesday at about 6:04pm local time (22:04 GMT), triggering panic across the country and causing extensive structural damage, particularly in the capital, Caracas.
Emergency responders have launched large-scale search and rescue operations, combing through collapsed buildings in an effort to locate survivors. Authorities have also shut down Simón Bolívar International Airport in Caracas, suspended school activities, and mobilised medical personnel to manage the growing humanitarian crisis.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez announced the state of emergency in a televised address, urging healthcare workers to report immediately to hospitals and calling on citizens to remain calm and vigilant as rescue operations continue.
