The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has urged telecom operators in Nigeria to urgently fix persistent network problems affecting voice and data services nationwide.

In a statement issued on Sunday, May 10, 2026, Tijani said the Federal Government has introduced key reforms to strengthen the sector, stressing that operators must now deliver improved service quality to consumers.

He directed MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and T2 to take decisive steps to address recurring disruptions and improve overall network performance.

Tijani said Nigeria’s connectivity challenges are structural, driven by years of underinvestment in critical infrastructure and long-standing operational constraints.

He noted that ongoing investments are expected to close these gaps within two to five years, with the goal of expanding broadband access and improving nationwide digital connectivity.

According to him, the objective is to ensure reliable high-speed internet, enabling small businesses and households to access stable fibre connections instead of unstable mobile data.

He also cited government reforms, including tariff adjustments, designation of telecom infrastructure as critical national infrastructure, tax harmonisation, and macroeconomic measures such as subsidy removal and exchange rate liberalisation.

Tijani said these steps have stabilised the sector, allowing operators to return to profitability and operate in a more predictable environment.

He argued that telecom companies now have the capacity to fix network deficiencies and improve service delivery.

The Minister added that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been empowered to monitor compliance, enforce standards, and sanction operators where necessary.

He said oversight will rely on NCC reports and public complaints, with expectations of measurable improvements in call quality, data speed, and coverage in the coming months.

Tijani stressed that Nigerians must receive value for money spent on telecom services, adding that improved service quality is now an immediate expectation.
