The CBS Radio Network, Akwa Ibom State’s first online radio service, has officially launched operations in Uyo, the state capital. The station, founded by veteran broadcast journalist Dr. Charles Bassey, is currently transmitting music, public service messages, and its identity signature tunes.
The pioneer online radio initiative has gained significant traction among residents, particularly radio enthusiasts. Speaking with our correspondent, Dr. Bassey, Managing Director/CEO of CBS Radio Network, said setting up the station was motivated by his desire to make radio accessible to people on the go.
“While radio remains the easiest access to news, information, and entertainment, people prefer social media, where they’re exposed to fake news, misinformation, and explicit content. This is why I took radio to the internet, so people can have wholesome content to consume,” he said.
Dr. Bassey, a seasoned broadcast professional, has worked in several broadcast organizations, including AKBC, NTA, Mitv, LTV, DBN TV, AIT/Raypower, Galaxy TV, and FRCN. He served as Controller, News and Current Affairs, Radio Nigeria South South, Government House correspondent, and Head of News and Current Affairs, Atlantic 104.5 FM Uyo, before retiring.
Looking ahead, Dr. Bassey is planning to make a mark in broadcasting with a Guinness World Record attempt at reading the longest news bulletin on radio for 120 hours. “We are preparing to go for the record, and we’re confident we’ll succeed,” he said.
The CBS Radio Network promises to bring added value to news and entertainment for the people of Akwa Ibom State and beyond.
