Leading opposition figures from across Nigeria assembled in Ibadan on Saturday for a crucial national summit focused on fostering unity and enhancing cooperation ahead of forthcoming elections.
The meeting took place at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House, drawing representatives from key opposition platforms such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), among others.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo presided over the session, while Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde hosted the gathering. Organisers described the engagement as a deliberate effort to address Nigeria’s mounting economic and security concerns through collective political action.
Held under the theme, “That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy,” the summit is widely regarded as a strategic move to reposition opposition groups and build a cohesive front capable of challenging the current administration.
In a statement posted on the PDP’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, organisers characterised the summit as a “strategic response” to the country’s growing challenges, highlighting the need for unified political engagement.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar confirmed his attendance, saying, “I have just arrived in Ibadan, Oyo State, for the National Summit of all opposition parties.”
Also speaking, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso expressed confidence in the outcome of the meeting, noting his readiness for “meaningful discussions with fellow national leaders.”
Among other prominent attendees were former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos State.
Sources at the venue indicated that deliberations would focus on developing a unified opposition structure, improving collaboration among parties, and crafting a strategic roadmap to effectively contest future elections.
