The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu has approved a major restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit, PMU, as part of ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, aimed at boosting efficiency, accountability, and discipline.
The reform, announced on Monday, April 20, 2026, is designed to reposition the Unit to better deliver on its core mandate by addressing operational gaps and strengthening internal oversight mechanisms across the Force.
According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, FPRO, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the reorganisation introduces a streamlined structure focused on proactive monitoring, intelligence-led inspections, and real-time supervision of police personnel and operations nationwide.
“The restructured framework harmonises critical investigative and monitoring functions in line with the Force’s broader reform agenda,” the statement noted.
As part of the changes, Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar has been appointed to head the Police Monitoring Unit, where he will oversee the implementation of the new operational framework.
Abubakar previously served at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State Commands, where he was involved in several high-profile investigations and efforts to modernise policing methods. He is widely recognised for his professionalism and commitment to transparency and community engagement.
The Inspector-General o of Police said that the restructuring is aimed at entrenching professionalism within the Force, noting that the Monitoring Unit will play a pivotal role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability across commands and formations.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to sustained institutional reforms and the delivery of a more transparent, accountable, and citizen-focused policing system.
