Akwa Ibom State Boxing Head Coach, Effiong Asuquo, has expressed delight following the installation of a new boxing ring to replace a 20-year-old facility.

The ring, delivered as part of ongoing sports development efforts, was unveiled at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, just weeks after the state government procured sports equipment worth over N300 million.

Asuquo praised Governor Umo Eno and Sports Commissioner Paul Bassey for their commitment to sports, promising improved performances and more medals.

“We are very happy for this new ring. The boxers are motivated to win more medals for the state,” he said.

Bassey revealed that more facilities are on the way, including plans to upgrade the swimming pool and build an indoor sports hall.

“We are not done yet. We need more facilities to grow our sports and position the state to host major events,” Bassey stated.

He added that while hosting a National Sports Festival is possible, the state must first complete key infrastructure upgrades.

Athletes also welcomed the development. Nyong Bassey Nyong Jr described the new ring as a better training environment, while Emediong Joseph and rising boxer Alexander Naomi said it would enhance preparation for future competitions.

Top sports stakeholders, including Permanent Secretary Rosemary Ubia, NUJ Chairman Nsibiet Udo John, and FA Chairman Samuel Umoh, witnessed the unveiling.
