The United States, US President Donald Trump has declared that he must play a role in determining Iran’s next leadership following the death of the country’s long-time Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

In an interview with Axios on Thursday, March 5, 2026, Trump dismissed the possibility of Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, succeeding his father, describing him as “a lightweight” and insisting that the United States must be involved in selecting a leader capable of fostering stability and peace. “They are wasting their time. Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” President Trump said.

The US President drew parallels to Venezuela, referencing Delcy Rodríguez, who assumed leadership after the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year. He warned that a successor who continues Khamenei’s policies could push the United States back into war with Iran within five years.

President Trump’s remarks come amid uncertainty in Iran following Khamenei’s death in late February during a series of joint airstrikes by US and Israeli forces on Iranian military and government targets. The attacks, part of an escalating military campaign over Iran’s regional influence and nuclear programme, reportedly struck strategic facilities across Tehran and other locations, triggering retaliatory missile and drone strikes against Israeli and U.S.-linked targets in the region.

The sudden demise of Iran’s Supreme Leader—who had ruled since 1989—has left a power vacuum, with the country yet to officially announce a successor. Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric with close ties to the powerful Revolutionary Guards, is widely regarded as a leading contender.

The leadership uncertainty in Iran has heightened global concerns over regional stability, energy security, and the risk of a broader Middle East conflict.
