The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed concern over what she described as a culture of public ridicule and hostility toward Nigerian leaders by citizens, stating that such attitudes undermine national unity and progress.
Mrs. Tinubu made the remarks in a Facebook post following her recent public recognition by United States, US President Donald Trump at the National Prayer Breakfast held in Washington, D.C.
During the annual event, which was attended by members of the US Congress, religious leaders, and international guests, President Trump referred to the Nigerian First Lady as a “very respected woman” while speaking on faith, leadership, and global religious freedom.
Reacting to the acknowledgment, Mrs. Tinubu lamented what she described as a disconnect between the respect Nigerian leaders receive internationally and how they are treated at home. According to her, political narratives and deep-seated resentment have influenced many Nigerians to undervalue their leaders.
“Most of our leaders are highly respected and honoured abroad, yet many Nigerians fail to value what they have because of hatred and the narratives planted in their minds by political paymasters, which have also hardened their hearts,” she wrote.
The First Lady further criticised the prevalence of online abuse and public mockery directed at Nigerian leaders, warning that such behaviour weakens national cohesion.
“They bully these leaders, speak ill of them, demean them, curse them, and even seize upon their mistakes to drag them across social media, ridiculing and mocking them publicly,” she stated.
Emphasising the importance of unity and mutual respect, Mrs. Tinubu urged Nigerians to support their leaders and work collaboratively toward national development.
“Nigeria is built on love, unity, and collective effort toward shared success. Let us come together to support our respected leaders and work hand in hand with them to make our country great,” she added.
