Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested three suspected members of a fraud syndicate and rescued a 81-year-old pensioner during an intelligence-led operation in Uyo, the state capital.
According to a Press Release issued on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Timfon John, the arrest was carried out on Monday, February 3, 2026, at about 3:30 p.m., following credible intelligence received from a concerned member of the public on the activities of a criminal group popularly known as “Utotoh,” allegedly operating within Uyo metropolis and its environs.
DSP John revealed that the suspects operated with a tricycle, which they used to lure unsuspecting victims, transport them to isolated locations, and allegedly dispossess them of money and other valuables through deceptive tactics.
Acting swiftly on the information, operatives of the Command tracked and arrested the suspects, identified as Otoabasi Ekpeyong (51), Ubong Sylvanus (42), and Sunday Akpan (60).
During the operation, a 81-year-old pensioner identified simply as Friday was found in the custody of the suspects and rescued unharmed.
Items recovered from the suspects include their operational tricycle, bearing registration number UFG-886-QA, which was discovered to be without a motor number.
According to the release, the suspects have confessed to the crime, admitting that they had defrauded several individuals across Uyo and neighbouring communities.
The Command stated that investigations are ongoing to identify and reach out to other victims, obtain their statements, and apprehend additional members of the syndicate who are currently at large.
Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of lives and property, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to security agencies to enhance crime prevention and public safety.
