The Federal Government has barred electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and installers from collecting fees for smart meters, insisting that all installations carried out under the World Bank–funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DSRP) must be provided at no cost to consumers.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, issued a stern warning that any official or company found demanding payment for the meters would be prosecuted, stressing that the policy is non-negotiable.

According to the minister, the initiative is part of the government’s effort to close Nigeria’s metering gap, with 3.4 million smart meters slated for deployment nationwide under the programme.

Adelabu said the move would protect electricity consumers from exploitation, improve transparency in billing, and accelerate reforms in the power sector
