The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him and his deputy of gross misconduct.
The process was formally initiated during plenary on Thursday, with the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, presiding over the session. The Leader of the Assembly, Major Jack, read out the notice of allegations, which was signed by 26 lawmakers.
Following the presentation, Amaewhule announced that the notice of gross misconduct would be served on the governor within the next seven days, in line with constitutional provisions.
Thursday’s development signals a fresh escalation in the prolonged political rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The crisis deepened on December 5, 2025, when a majority of Rivers lawmakers, led by Amaewhule, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Days later, Governor Fubara also formally dumped the PDP for the APC.
Despite the defections, tensions between Wike and Fubara have persisted, marked by public exchanges and political manoeuvring that previously culminated in the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State in March 2025.
Most members of the Rivers State House of Assembly are believed to have remained loyal to Wike, further complicating the fragile political situation in the oil-rich state.
