The Akwa Ibom Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to women’s development under its ARISE Agenda.
Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, made the declaration during the commemoration of the 1929 Women’s War in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, a historic event where courageous women resisted colonial oppression. The event, held at the Council Headquarters, drew dignitaries, community leaders, and stakeholders.

The Deputy Governor stressed the need to correctly document historic events, noting that the 1929 Women’s War is often wrongly linked to Aba, and that other important narratives, including Mary Slessor’s work in Akwa Ibom, are frequently overlooked.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Unity for Excellence,” she highlighted women’s critical role in society—from family structures to leadership in government and industry—and pledged that the state government will continue empowering women through economic inclusion, skills development, advocacy, and leadership opportunities.

Noble Lady Helen Eno Obareki, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady and Special Guest of Honour, lauded the bravery of the 1929 heroines, urging women to emulate their courage and dedication to community development.

In her remarks, Chairman of the occasion, Mrs Nyakno Uwem Okoko, while highlighting the essence of the day, said it was necessary to give women equal opportunity and
empowerment, while calling on them to use the occasion to rekindle the spirit of renewed hope.
Chairman of Ikot Abasi LGA represented by his Vice, Hon. Idongesit Ekarika while welcoming the guests, said this year’s theme illustrates the resilience of women and the power of teamwork in surmounting obstacles.
