Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has commended the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) for consistently promoting peace and unity, emphasizing that hatred should never be an option.

Speaking yesterday at the COCIN Church in Jos during a service held in honour of Mama Lydia Yilwatda, mother of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Tinubu said no one can alter what God has ordained.

“I inherited Islam but married a pastor. We may have different faiths, but we all pray to the same Almighty God,” the President said, while praying for the repose of the late Mama Yilwatda’s soul.

President Tinubu also recalled memories from his political past, noting that seeing Ambassador Yahaya Kwande’s house on his way to the church reminded him of the historic meeting held there to decide the fate of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola following the annulled June 12 election.

Responding to a request from Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the President assured that more national appointments would be made from Plateau State, acknowledging the contributions of Prof. Yilwatda and other leaders from the region.

“We honour our National Chairman. You have proven to be a capable and performing leader. Mama lived a dedicated life, and this gathering reflects peace and unity,” Tinubu said.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks, thanked the church for its role in promoting stability and development across the region.

He told the congregation that the nation had gathered to honour a life well-lived at 83.

“The entire Nigeria is here. Mr. President, the church sees you as a unifier. It’s clear that Plateau has embraced the APC spirit — even the streets are decorated with our party flags,” Akpabio said.

Governor Mutfwang, in his welcome address, appreciated the President’s presence and fatherly support, praying for divine guidance in his leadership.

He also acknowledged the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her contributions to national unity.

The governor appealed for continued federal support, particularly in addressing lingering security challenges in the state, which he said had forced some residents to abandon their homes.

He disclosed that he and Prof. Yilwatda attended the same school, describing the APC chairman’s appointment as well-deserved, and urged the President to extend more appointments to Plateau State.

Mama Lydia Yilwatda’s remains have since been moved to her hometown, Gungur, in Kanke Local Government Area, for burial.
