The Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to cleaner, cheaper, and more efficient transportation.
According to the State Chief Executive, his government is constructing a world-class Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Bus Terminal in Uyo, that will feature a gas station, Training School, repair workshop to train engineers, CNG technology, and a maintenance unit.
Recall that the project was initially planned for Odiok Itam in Itu Local Government Area. However, during an on-the-spot inspection, yesterday, Governor Eno explained that the decision to relocate the terminal to Obio Offot and Ikot Akpe communities in Uyo was taken after careful evaluation to ensure better accessibility, convenience, and smoother operations for commuters and transport operators within the capital city.
He said the project represents a major leap in the state’s transport modernization plan, in line with the President Tinubu CNG Initiative aimed at reducing fuel costs, promoting green energy, and creating new employment opportunities for young people.
It would be recalled that in 2023, the Federal Government launched the CNG buses through the Presidential CNG Initiative to encourage a nationwide shift from petrol and diesel to natural gas-powered vehicles as part of efforts to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal and promote environmental sustainability.
To ensure that Akwa Ibom people benefit directly from the initiative, the Eno-led administration in the first phase is procuring 50 CNG buses to strengthen public transportation across the state.
The Governor, who commended the host communities for their cooperation, called on youths in the area to take ownership of the project, support ongoing construction, and protect the facility against vandalism or encroachment.
According to him, the terminal will not only serve as a transit hub but also as a learning and innovation centre where local engineers and technicians will be trained on CNG conversion, repair, and maintenance to expand technical capacity in the state.
The NewsDESK observes that, with the project now taking shape, the Akwa Ibom CNG Bus Terminal will in a few months stand as a major hub for alternative energy transportation in the South-South region. The initiative will further position the state as a frontrunner in sustainable urban mobility in line with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno.
