The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has begun implementing new pension increments for more than 832,000 retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).

In a statement posted on its official X handle, the agency said the adjustments, which take effect from the September 2025 payroll cycle, include a fixed payment of N32,000 for eligible pensioners as well as percentage increases of 10.66% and 12.95% for specified categories.

The increment followed the approval of President Bola Tinubu in August 2025 after PTAD’s Executive Secretary, Tolulope Odunaiya, made a formal request for improved welfare packages. The Federal Ministry of Finance later released N820.188 billion from emergency funds to enable the directorate to begin the payments.

According to PTAD, the revised benefits are targeted at pensioners who retired before the Contributory Pension Scheme was introduced in 2004. The reforms are expected to reduce recurring problems such as irregular disbursements, delays in harmonization, and the lack of access to adequate healthcare among retirees.

The directorate expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, the Minister of Finance, and other stakeholders for backing the scheme. It also commended organized pension groups, including the Nigeria Union of Pensioners and the Federal Parastatals and Private Sector Pensioners Association of Nigeria, for their cooperation during negotiations and planning.

PTAD further assured beneficiaries that it is working with relevant authorities to ensure the release of the outstanding funds already approved and to sustain future commitments under the new pension structure.
