Nigeria edged Rwanda 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday night, thanks to a decisive 51st-minute strike from Tolu Arokodare in the ongoing FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Super Eagles dominated possession in the first half but struggled to break down a disciplined Rwandan defence. Their persistence, however, paid off shortly after the restart when Ola Aina burst down the flank to whip in a dangerous ball. Arokodare’s effort thundered off the underside of the crossbar before bouncing over the line, sparking celebrations among the home fans.
Rwanda responded with urgency, creating nervy moments for the hosts. Goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari had earlier denied Arokodare with a sharp save, and the visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser. A crucial clearance from Calvin Bassey preserved Nigeria’s lead, while the introduction of William Troost-Ekong shored up the defence against a late wave of set-piece pressure.
The final minutes turned into a battle of nerves, with every Nigerian clearance met by thunderous cheers from the stands. When the referee signalled full time, the stadium erupted in relief and joy as fans waved flags and players embraced on the pitch.
With this hard-fought win, Nigeria’s attention now shifts to their crucial clash against South Africa on Tuesday, where the Super Eagles will aim to build momentum in their qualifying campaign.
