Hospitals in Abuja descended into chaos Tuesday, July 29, as striking nurses under the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, disrupted operations, forcing critical departments to shut down and some patients to be discharged prematurely, FirstNEWS reported.
The seven-day warning strike, which entered its second day, has left major health facilities in disarray, including the Federal Medical Centre, Wuse General Hospital, and National Hospital, where patients crowded waiting areas while doctors struggled to manage without nursing staff.
At Wuse General Hospital, Accident and Emergency units discharged patients early due to lack of manpower. “The doctors are trying, but it’s not enough. Everyone’s tired,” said patient Simon Adebiyi.
NANNM insists the strike is over unaddressed demands for improved welfare, including a new salary structure, allowances, and recruitment of more nurses. Union leaders warn of a total shutdown if their grievances remain unresolved after the warning strike, with an ultimatum set to follow.
Meanwhile, families and patients continue to endure long waits, unattended wards, and halted services across the city’s hospitals, underscoring the vital role nurses play in sustaining Nigeria’s healthcare system.
