In a major legal victory, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has been discharged and acquitted of all money laundering charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The ruling was delivered on Tuesday morning by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, bringing an end to a prolonged legal battle that spanned several years.

Fayose, who was accused of laundering public funds during his tenure as governor, had consistently denied the allegations. The EFCC alleged that he misappropriated funds amounting to hundreds of millions of naira—charges that attracted national attention and dominated political discourse for years.

However, the court upheld a no-case submission filed by Fayose’s legal team, ruling that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case that would warrant the defendant entering a defence.

In its judgment, the court stated that the EFCC’s evidence was “insufficient” and lacked the weight required to sustain the serious charges brought against the former governor.
