In a bold declaration that is already sparking political reactions, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has ruled out stepping down for any Southern presidential hopeful within the emerging ADC-led opposition coalition, stating that only a transparent primary election should determine who flies the coalition’s flag in the 2027 general elections.
The declaration came during a closed-door meeting of coalition leaders in Abuja on Monday, July 8, 2025, where Atiku met with key members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and allied opposition blocs currently exploring a merger or alliance to unseat the ruling party in 2027.
Atiku, who has contested for president multiple times and was the PDP flagbearer in 2019 and 2023, emphasized that national unity and meritocracy must override regional sentiments. He stated clearly that while he respects Southern leaders in the coalition, he would not step aside simply because of zoning or ethnic balancing.
“We must allow the people, our members and delegates, to decide through a credible process. If we bypass democracy in choosing our candidate, how can we convince Nigerians we are ready to govern differently?” Atiku told the coalition stakeholders present at the meeting.
