No fewer than five serving governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, fourteen former ministers, and eight former governors are reportedly in advanced talks to join the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Newsweek reported.
This unprecedented move, according to credible sources, is part of a broader strategy to form a strong third-force coalition capable of challenging the dominance of both the APC and the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in future elections. The negotiations are said to be spearheaded by influential political stakeholders who have become disillusioned with the current direction of the ruling APC and are seeking a new platform with a fresh ideological orientation.
According to Newsweek, discussions are reportedly being held discreetly in Abuja, Lagos, and other key locations, with political analysts suggesting that this wave of defections, if successful, could significantly alter Nigeria’s political landscape. Insiders reveal that the talks are centered around reforming the ADC into a robust and nationally appealing platform, with key assurances being sought on internal democracy, leadership restructuring, and a clear development agenda.
Among the serving APC governors involved in the talks are those from the North-West, South-West, and North-Central regions, although their identities are being kept under wraps for strategic reasons. Similarly, the former ministers and ex-governors said to be in the loop are reportedly aligning based on shared grievances over marginalization, unmet political expectations, and internal wranglings within the APC, Newsweek reported.
A senior official within the ADC, who preferred anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks, confirmed that the party has opened its doors wide for fresh entrants but stressed that integrity and commitment to the party’s ideals would be a prerequisite.
“We are in a new phase in the ADC,” the source said. “This is not just about numbers, but about building a formidable, principled political force that can represent the true yearnings of Nigerians.”
Political observers believe that the movement, if finalized, will likely usher in a major shift, especially in the National Assembly and among state power blocs. Many also view the move as a sign of growing dissatisfaction within the APC ranks amid economic challenges, rising insecurity, and controversies surrounding internal party leadership.
As the 2027 elections approach, more realignments and defections are expected as political actors jostle for relevance and influence in the emerging new order.
While the APC has yet to officially react to the development, insiders say the party leadership is aware of the brewing discontent and is already exploring strategies to contain further defections.
The African Democratic Congress, founded in 2005, has historically maintained a modest presence in Nigeria’s political sphere but may now be on the verge of a major resurgence as it becomes a magnet for top political figures seeking a new platform for their ambitions.
