Braving a heavy downpour, Akwa Ibom State Governor , Pastor Umo Eno has formally launched the construction of the 12.6 Km Nung Ukim–Afaha Obio Enwang–Nung Udoe–Itak Road, a strategic rural link between Uyo and Ikono Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State.

The project commencement ceremony, held on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, and performed on behalf of the Governor by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, marks a significant step in fulfilling a major campaign promise and advancing the ARISE Agenda’s rural development thrust.

Describing Governor Eno as a promise keeper, Prince Uwah emphasized that the road project is another testament to the administration’s resolve to connect rural communities to the state capital through durable, accessible infrastructure. He assured that the road will be completed and commissioned within two years.

Welcoming the Governor on behalf of the two benefitting local government areas, the Chairman of Ikono , Engr. Otobong Essien accompanied by the Vice Chairman of Uyo LGA, expressed profound appreciation to the Governor for his focus on rural transformation.

She noted that the road would significantly improve connectivity and boost economic activities in the region.

Presenting a technical overview, the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, explained that the road, which spans nine villages across both LGAs, will feature an 8-metre-wide carriageway, 25 kilometres of side drains, as well as reinforced culverts and outfall drains at strategic points to ensure durability and sustainability.

He further disclosed that the road will be constructed with a 150mm sub-base, 150mm stone base, and a 50mm asphaltic wearing course—meeting standard specifications for long-lasting performance.

On behalf of the contractor, Verini Construction Company Ltd, Mr. Ini Utuk thanked Governor Eno for the trust placed in the indigenous firm. He pledged to deliver a quality, durable road project within record time, in line with the Governor’s infrastructure development vision.
