Oku Ibom Ibibio Backs Call For Constitutional Role For Traditional Rulers

Wednesday June 25, 2025

His Eminence, Ntenyin (Dr.) Solomon Etuk, CFR, the Oku Ibom Ibibio and President General of Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers have defended calls for a constitutional role for traditional rulers.

The Akwa Ibom monarch made his position known in Calabar during the 14th Extraordinary General Assembly of the South South Monarchs Forum.

He emphasized that it will amount to a child’s play if this is not done as traditional rulers remain the closest to the people.

“I’m in full support for a constitutional role for traditional rulers in the country. We have already presented our papers on this to the national assembly.

“We must be recognized in the constitution of the country otherwise what we are doing is a child’s play.

“We are the fathers and closest to people at the grassroots, this is an advantage already and the government has to build on this”, he said.

On the issue of improved security within the grassroots, he said it’s a collective thing and that enhanced synergy between the government and traditional rulers can make a positive difference.
