US Embassy Issues Security Alert, Warns Americans To Avoid Military And Govt Sites In Abuja

Monday June 23, 2025

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued an urgent security advisory to American citizens in Abuja, warning them to avoid Nigerian military bases and government facilities due to heightened global security concerns, ARISE News reported.

In a notice titled Emergency Information for American Citizens, released on Monday, the Embassy advised US nationals to steer clear of all Nigerian military and government installations in the capital, citing increased risks. It also confirmed that all US Embassy employees and their family members are now prohibited from engaging in non-official travel to such locations.

“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time,” the statement read.

The Embassy’s message underscores a growing sense of unease over potential threats, especially at high-profile sites associated with government or security agencies. Though specific threats were not disclosed, the advisory reflects broader concerns following global geopolitical developments.

US citizens in Abuja have been urged to remain especially alert in public spaces and exercise caution in areas commonly visited by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials. Citizens are also advised to avoid large gatherings, reduce non-essential travel, and avoid predictable daily routines that could expose them to potential threats. In addition, they are encouraged to familiarise themselves with emergency exits when entering buildings and to revisit and strengthen their personal security plans.

Despite the security alert, the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open and fully operational. Citizens have been encouraged to regularly check the US Mission’s official website for updates and further guidance.
