Zelensky Appoints New Commander Of Ukraine’s Land Forces Following Deadly Russian Strike

Friday June 20, 2025|

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Hennadiy Shapovalov as the new commander of Ukraine’s land forces, following the resignation of Mykhailo Drapatyi in the wake of a deadly Russian strike on a military training area in southeastern Ukraine.

The appointment was confirmed in a presidential decree issued on Thursday. Shapovalov brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served as the commander of Operational Command “South” and most recently as a liaison officer at a NATO coordination centre in Germany.

Shapovalov replaces Drapatyi, who stepped down earlier this month after the attack that led to significant casualties among Ukrainian personnel. The incident sparked public scrutiny and raised questions about training security and battlefield preparedness.

As part of a broader military reshuffle, Drapatyi has now been reassigned to lead Ukraine’s joint forces command — a critical position as the war with Russia continues to intensify.
