DSP Aminu Babayo, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Finima in Bonny Island, Rivers State, has denied allegations that he leased two operational Hilux patrol vehicles to private companies in the area.
Reports emerged on Tuesday indicating that Babayo had allegedly rented the vehicles to two companies, Megastar Technical and Construction Limited and Northridge Engineering Limited, after negotiating monthly payments with them.
However, sources indicate that the vehicles were intended solely for security patrol duties, given the heightened security concerns in Bonny Island, which faces challenges such as kidnapping and other criminal activities.
When contacted on Wednesday, DSP Babayo claimed that the vehicles are actively utilised for patrols within the company premises, saying that they are importance in maintaining security and protecting personnel and assets at construction sites.
Meanwhile, the DPO’s assertions have sparked concern among local residents and community leaders, who are calling for a comprehensive investigation into the situation.
One of the community leaders who spoke to our correspondent in confidence argued that such arrangements could undermine public trust in the police force and may violate regulations concerning the use of government property.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Grace Iringe-Koko, the Rivers State Command Police Public Relations Officer, who was earlier contacted for comment on the allegations.
“We urge the authorities to conduct a transparent investigation to clarify the facts and ensure accountability. We are deeply concerned about the management and oversight of public resources, especially in Bonny Island, where significant industrial activity is taking place.
“We advocate for stronger oversight mechanisms to prevent potential misuse of government assets and to uphold the integrity of public institutions,” stated a community leader who requested anonymity due to fears of retaliation.
