The Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has celebrated a former Uyo Area Superintendent of the United Evangelical Church (formerly Qua Iboe Church), Reverend Friday W. Umoren, on his 90th birthday.
Represented by the Deputy Governor, Senator (Dr) Akon Eyakenyi at the thanksgiving service held in Reverend Umoren’s honor at the Church Cathedral, Aka Road, Uyo, on Sunday, June 15, the Governor expressed gratitude to God for the gift of longevity and for Reverend Umoren’s inspiring contributions to the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Pastor Eno, who described the servant of God as a man of unbridled humility, noted that this virtue is the hallmark of servant- leadership.
“Your life has been a testament of love and unbridled humility. A case in point is when, as a contestant for the exalted office of the National Chairman of Qua Iboe Church, your votes tallied with your co-contestant, the Reverend Ossom A. Ossom. You characteristically refused to go for a run-off, instead offering all your votes to your co-contestant, thus making him the National Chairman.
“That’s the hallmark of a selfless leader, which has been the defining element of your life.”
Governor Eno further acknowledged Revd Umoren’s inspiring qualities as a trained nurse in the fashion of the famed Florence Nightingale, whose nursing service was without pecuniary expectations, saying the government was inspired by these Christ-like tendencies.
“We as a government have been manifestly inspired by your Christ-like tendencies, especially your love for the poor and the vulnerable.
“As you celebrate your birthday today, we pray for more robust health and a sound mind so you may continue to serve humanity.”
In his homily, themed: “The Benefits of God Upon Our Lives,” with biblical reference from Psalm 68:18-19, Revd Dr. Samuel Ebukiba (JP) stated that the benefits of God in human lives were made possible through His grace.
He emphasized that when God is appreciated for His blessings, He will do more and continue to shower His children with more benefits.
The thanksgiving service, which was attended by several dignitaries, including members of the State Executive Council and the celebrant’s family, featured renditions of hymns, prayers, presentations of gifts, and goodwill messages from family, the clergy, and friends.
