The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has urged the United States to expedite the delivery of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, describing their arrival as crucial to strengthening Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and internal insecurity.

In a statement released on Sunday, June 15, by the Nigerian Air Force spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, Abubakar made the call during a high-level Programme Management Review Meeting held from June 9 to 13 in San Diego, California.

The meeting brought together senior officials from the U.S. government and representatives of Bell Textron, the manufacturers of the helicopters, to assess progress on the procurement deal and adjust implementation timelines.

“We are deeply grateful to the United States Government for its enduring strategic partnership with Nigeria,” Abubakar said.

“The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters will significantly enhance the Nigerian Air Force’s combat effectiveness, operational efficiency, and mission readiness.

“We are fully committed to ensuring these platforms are delivered in the shortest possible time. Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process,” he added.

The Air Chief stressed that the helicopters, known for their advanced targeting systems, survivability, and agility, would enhance Nigeria’s air power in key conflict zones.

As part of the visit, Abubakar also toured Camp Pendleton, where he met with senior officers of the U.S. Marine Corps and inspected AH-1Z Viper units operated by Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39.

“This visit has provided a unique opportunity to understand best practices for the operation, sustainment, and logistical support of the AH-1Z platform from the United States Marine Corps,” he noted.

He assured that once delivered, the helicopters would be used strategically and responsibly in accordance with international law to combat insurgents, bandits, and other criminal groups threatening Nigeria’s peace.

“Our goal is to create enduring peace while protecting innocent lives and property in line with internationally accepted rules of engagement,” Abubakar said.

He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued backing of the Nigerian Air Force, noting that the acquisition of the helicopters reflects the President’s strong commitment to national security.
