The Akwa Ibom/Cross River Chapter of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers, has donated science equipment and books worth millions of naira to Western Annang Secondary Commercial School, WÀSCO, Ikot Akpa Nkuk, Ukanafun LGA.
The presentation exercise took place, Wednesday, June 11, at the school compound and also featured career counselling, questions and answers session.
Equipment ranging from beakers, burners, conical flasks, lens, organs models, tripod stands to customized exercise books and biro pens, were presented to the school and students, courtesy of an alumnus of the school, Professor Esang Esitkot.
EsitIkot, a Chemical Engineer, said the gesture was like giving back to his alma mater, adding that he was moved by the decay in infrastructure and facilities to think in that direction.
The university don appreciated other Alumni, particularly, the member for Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon Unyime Idem, for efforts he had put in to rescue to decay in the premier secondary school.
He called on other spirited individuals and government to help bring back the lost glory of WASCO.
The WASCO old boy encouraged the students to remain focused and pursue careers that will stand the test of time, while
emphasizing the importance of creativity, problem-solving skills, and collaboration in engineering.
He also listed factors to consider when choosing a career, including interest, strength, and long-term goals.
The chairman of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers, Engineer Ikemesit Orok and other executives and members from Akwa Ibom and Cross River States chapter accompanied Professor Esit-Ikot on his visit.
Orok advised the students to develop an interest in the chemical engineering profession and highlighted the body’s commitment to supporting education.
The General Secretary of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers, Engineer Ahmed Isa, and other officials were also on ground.
They applauded EsitIkot for the gesture and provided success tips for the students.
A Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs Mfon Umoren, educated the students on health matters. She emphasized the importance of maintaining good health and focusing on their education to achieve their goals.
The principal-general of the school, Pastor Udeme Akpan, commended the philanthropic gestures of the old students. He lamented the school’s dire need for attention and expressed gratitude for the support.
The students expressed joy and gratitude for the visit and the knowledge acquired during the career talk. They prayed for EsitIkot’s continued success and promised to study hard to become useful to themselves and society.
