Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Information, Rt Hon Aniekan Umanah, has dismissed a recent report by online news outlet Sahara Reporters alleging that the state government is expending N1.2 billion on its forthcoming state anniversary celebration.

Describing the report as “sensational,” the Commissioner cautioned against drawing conclusions from budgetary provisions without a proper understanding of the budgeting process.

Speaking during a live interview on 60 Minutes Live on NTA Uyo, Umanah emphasized that a budget is merely a projection of intent and not actual expenditure.

“A budget is only an estimate, not an expenditure. It represents an intent as captured in the Appropriation Law. No kobo has been spent on the anniversary event, which is scheduled for September,” he said.

He explained that while state anniversaries typically involve extensive planning , including beautification, infrastructure upgrades, and logistics , every financial commitment under Governor Umo Eno’s administration must follow due process.

“In budgeting, even if funds are appropriated, one must understand the details of line items and expenditure codes, seek authority to incur expenditure, and obtain official releases , all subject to availability and government priorities,” the Commissioner stated.

Rt Hon Umanah urged the public not to be misled or alarmed by misrepresentations, reaffirming the transparency, prudence, and fiscal discipline that define Governor Umo Eno’s leadership.

“Governor Umo Eno is a very prudent leader. He has demonstrated a strong commitment to accountability in the management of public resources and will not fritter away state funds,” he assured.

He called on media platforms to verify sensitive information with relevant authorities before publication, to ensure responsible journalism and prevent the spread of misinformation.
