The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Samuel Ogbuku has announced that the interventionist agency is set to commence local postgraduate scholarship programme for Niger Delta youths seeking to further their studies.
Ogbuku, who stated this after inspecting the oral interview session for candidates of the 2025 NDDC Foreign Postgraduate Scholarship programme in Port Harcourt, said the local postgraduate scholarship programme will offer admission to 600 students yearly.
He said the decision to commence the local postgraduate scholarship followed the successes recorded over the years from the foreign postgraduate scholarship programme of the commission.
The NDDC scholarship programme, which started in 2010, is designed to produce top-level professionals with technical knowledge, capacity, and expertise to compete in the oil and gas industry and other sectors.
The scholarship programme covers science disciplines, including engineering, agricultural science, environmental science, geosciences, information technology, and management sciences, including law and architecture.
Speaking of the successes of the foreign postgraduate scholarship programme, the NDDC Managing Director said, “Last year we actually had multiple distinctions, this year too from the report we are having, we will have multiple distinctions too from our scholars in various schools in UK and America and I think with we are encouraged to do more.
“It is as a result of the successes that we are introducing the local postgraduate scholarship because since the one for the foreign postgraduate scholarship is limited we felt we should also accommodate more persons in the local universities and that will be the next phase we are going into immediately we round off with this foreign postgraduate scholarship”.
He added that, “For the foreign scholarship, we are doing just 200, but for the local scholarship, we will be doing 600, which is going to accommodate more persons. This exercise (the oral interview session) is ending on Friday, so by Monday, the publication for the local postgraduate scholarship programme will be out and people will start applying”.
