Akwa Ibom Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has expressed appreciation to stakeholders in the Akwa Ibom project across party lines, acknowledging their cooperation, counsel, and especially constructive criticisms.
Speaking during his second anniversary media dialogue held on Monday at Akpan Isemin Hall, Government House, Uyo, the governor said he prefers to be told what he has not done, rather than be praised for what he has achieved, stressing that he holds the people’s mandate in trust and must justify it.
“I like to say upfront that if we have succeeded at all, it’s for two reasons: one, the grace and faithfulness of God; and two, the right team in place. That’s why I surround myself with my ‘first eleven,’ as I call them. They are the ones interpreting the vision and making things happen. If we’ve succeeded, it has been because of teamwork,” he said.
He added, “My sincere appreciation goes to stakeholders across party lines for their support and counsel, and most especially to those who criticise me. I thank them too, because without constructive criticism, the world would not be a better place.
“It’s been two years of learning and discovery. I thank everyone. In my earlier broadcast, I highlighted some of our achievements, but what I really want to hear today are the things you believe we haven’t done — so we can take those lessons along.”
Governor Eno noted that midway into his first term, his administration had not performed poorly, stating that he believes he has achieved over 50 percent of the goals set out in his Arise Agenda blueprint.
However, he said it is ultimately the people and residents of the state—who are the direct beneficiaries of the agenda—who should assess and rate his performance.
He highlighted key areas of achievement within the two-year period, including agriculture, rural development, infrastructure expansion and maintenance, security, and education, which he described as the five pillars of his administration’s agenda.
According to him, the successes recorded so far are the results of teamwork, public support, and divine grace.
He said, “This administration has enjoyed enormous goodwill and support from the people of Akwa Ibom since May 29, 2023.
“The collaboration from members of my cabinet, the support from our people, and God’s grace have empowered us to serve effectively.
“We also have assessments from independent organisations and I believe we are on the right track. While we haven’t reached our destination, the midterm report of our first tenure shows that we’ve crossed the 50 percent mark.”
He urged Akwa Ibom people to engage deliberately in agriculture to reduce the cost of food items and strengthen food security.
“I like to leave the assessment of our performance over the past two years to the people. If I were to rate myself, I would naturally say I’ve done well — and that would be selfish. The people should be the judge,” the governor added.
Governor Eno reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy across the state, stating that every one of the 31 local government areas is being represented in ongoing projects.
