Members of the River State faction of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) boycotted the annual May Day Celebration at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Elemahia, in Port Harcourt, the state’s capital, on Thursday.

Rather than join the workers’ day celebration, the union members converged on the NLC Secretariat in Port Harcourt to demand the reinstatement of suspended governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.

This comes after the NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, directed the faction’s members to boycott the celebration, citing the absence of a democratic governor in the state.

“We appeal to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to use his good office and intention to reinstate the democratically elected Governor, Deputy Governor and the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to their offices as soon as possible,” said the State NLC Chairman, Alex Agwanwor.

Members of Rivers NLC carried placards at the secretariat on Thursday, calling for Fubara’s reinstatement.

Agwangwor stated that the union has a cordial relationship with the suspended governor and has no relationship with the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ebok-Ete Ekwe Ibas.

“As workers of Rivers State, we enjoy a good working relationship with our elected representatives under a democratic system of government,” Agwanwor said.
