Tanzanian police detained two senior opposition leaders on Thursday as they were en route to a court hearing for party leader Tundu Lissu, who has been charged with treason. The detained individuals, CHADEMA party Deputy Chairperson John Heche and Secretary General John Mnyika, were taken into custody while heading to Kisutu Magistrate Court in Dar es Salaam. Party spokesperson Brenda Rupia confirmed the detentions, ARISE News reports.
The reasons for their arrest remain unclear, as a police spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The detentions have raised concerns about the treatment of opposition figures in Tanzania, where political tensions have been growing.
Tundu Lissu, the prominent opposition leader and 2020 presidential runner-up, faces treason charges after prosecutors accused him of delivering a speech urging the public to rebel and disrupt the October election. Lissu has not been allowed to enter a plea on the charges, which have drawn significant attention to the government’s handling of political dissent.
The case has further spotlighted the human rights record of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is seeking re-election. While Hassan has repeatedly stated that her government is committed to respecting human rights, critics argue that the charges against Lissu, and the recent detentions of opposition leaders, contradict these claims.
As tensions rise in the lead-up to the next presidential election, opposition parties and international observers are closely watching the government’s treatment of political opponents and its approach to free speech and political expression.
