The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rescued a two-day-old baby sold for ₦800,000 by its mother, Blessing Walter, and grandmother, Grace Walter, both from Oti Oron, Oron Local Government Area, the Command’s public relations officer, DSP Timfon John said in a press release.
The police also arrested a gang of suspected child traffickers during the operation along the Nsit Atai-Oron road.
“On April 20, a patrol team intercepted a Mazda vehicle (registration YAB 454 AA) driven by Bethel Anyanwu with two female passengers and the infant.
Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John said, “The occupants could not provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the infant.”
The passengers, Nasikpo Sonia Labere and Inemesit Okin Akpan, confessed to being sent from Port Harcourt by Waazor Godwin and Lilian Duru to collect the baby from Grace Inyang in Oron.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Alison Eduno, who facilitated the transaction. John added, “They confessed to selling the baby for the sum of eight hundred thousand Naira (₦800,000).”
All suspects are in custody at Ikot Akpan Abia, and the baby is under the care of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare in Uyo.
