The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has bestowed the member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency and chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Public Procurement, Rep. Unyime Idem, with a distinguished award.

The award, according to ICAN, is in recognition of Rep. Idem’s “visionary leadership and effective representation at the House of Representatives, contributing immensely to the growth and development of Akwa Ibom state.”

Presenting the award to Rep. Idem at his Uyo residence, the Chairman, ICAN Uyo District and Society, Edidem Utuk, FCA, noted that the honour, which is uncommon in ICAN’s history, was approved by the national leadership, piloted the body’s 60th National President, Chief Davidson Alaribe.

Utuk noted that the foremost body of Accountants found Rep. Idem worthy of the honour following his sterling performance in legislative activities, empowerment, attracting infrastructural projects, payment of bursary and scholarships, facilitating federal government jobs, foreign training of Akwa Ibomites, among others.

He also used the opportunity to appeal to the federal lawmaker, on behalf of ICAN, to support the body’s amendment Bill, currently before the National Assembly.

Responding, Rep. Unyime Idem, thanked ICAN for identifying his modest efforts in touching the lives of Akwa Ibomites, and for the award, noting that he is encouraged to do more.

“Thank you so much for this distinguished honour today. I’m immensely grateful. ICAN is a noble body that is reckoned with nationally, especially given your role in ensuring public and private sector business run smoothly. Without your role and professionalism, there will be a visible lacuna in the society, so this underscores your critical role in nation building.”

On ICAN’s request, Rep. Idem promised to not only support the bill, but to also “rally his colleagues to support the legislation to scale through.”

He also promised to provide other legislative support needed to make the body function optimally.
