The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Akwa Ibom State has endorsed the declaration of support by Senate President Godswill Akpabio for the re-election of Governor Umo Eno in the upcoming 2027 general elections, citing the unity fostered by Eno’s administration as the primary catalyst for the endorsement, ThePUNCH reports.
On Thursday, Akpabio, through his wife, Mrs. Ekaette Akpabio, publicly announced his support for Governor Eno’s re-election during a town hall meeting for the Ikot-Ekpene federal constituency.
This declaration followed closely on the heels of Governor Eno’s endorsement of President Bola Tinubu, two days earlier, affirming his support for the President to complete his eight-year term.
In an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday, April 20, 2025, the Director-General of the APC Media Network in Akwa Ibom, Iniobong John, explained that Akpabio’s support for Eno was a reciprocal gesture.
“Governor Eno, as a leader in the PDP, took a bold step by supporting President Tinubu against his party’s stance and the position of the PDP Governors’ Forum,” John said. “For us, it is only fair and proper to reciprocate the governor’s gesture, especially as it was a significant show of unity and oneness.”
John further emphasised that the bipartisan support is rooted in mutual respect and the spirit of collaboration.
“It is about unity. The governor, as a leader in the PDP, stood with our President, who has faced opposition from the PDP since he took office in 2023. Therefore, our leader, Senator Akpabio, is supporting Governor Eno in the same spirit.”
On the possibility of Governor Eno switching allegiance to the APC, John did not rule out the idea.
“If Governor Eno can support President Tinubu, who is also the APC leader and a likely candidate for the 2027 election, it makes sense that he may eventually consider joining our party. His support for the President will be complete and natural in such a case,” he remarked.
With both parties fostering closer ties, APC and PDP in Akwa Ibom may see a new era of political collaboration leading into the 2027 elections.
