At least eight people have been killed following the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED) suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram insurgents along the Damboa-Maiduguri road in northeastern Nigeria’s Borno State.
The attack occurred on Saturday, according to local sources, and left several others injured.
Victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency medical attention.
An X user (formerly Twitter), @OffucialAzzaki, posted about the incident, stating, “A bomb blast just occurred along Damboa road to Maiduguri.
Sadly, 8 lives were lost, and several others are hospitalized with injuries. Please pray for the victims.”
Authorities have yet to release a formal statement. When contacted, Borno State Police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso Kenneth confirmed he was still gathering information.
The incident comes amid rising concerns over deteriorating security in the region.
On Friday, Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South revealed during a televised interview that Boko Haram had effectively seized control of at least three communities in the state—Gudumbali, Marte, and Abadam—displacing civil authorities.
“There is no government presence in those areas,” Ndume stated. “The authority there is Boko Haram.”
Governor Babagana Zulum has also raised alarm over a resurgence in insurgent activity, warning earlier in the week that the frequency of attacks and kidnappings suggests the state is “losing ground.”
Senator Ndume echoed those concerns, citing more than 250 attacks since November, with over 100 soldiers and nearly 300 civilians reportedly killed.
Despite heavy losses, he acknowledged that Nigerian forces had also killed approximately 800 insurgents during that period.
The lawmaker criticized the preparedness of security agencies, attributing the prolonged crisis to inadequate equipment and poor strategic planning.
“It is a stagnated situation,” Ndume said. “The president must declare a state of emergency—not just on security, but also on the economy and welfare of the citizens.”
The latest attack on the Damboa-Maiduguri road serves as a grim reminder of the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram in the northeast and the ongoing challenges in restoring stability to the region.
