Hamas Warns Hostages at Risk Amid Israel’s Renewed Gaza Offensive

Palestinian militant group Hamas has warned that Israeli hostages in Gaza could be killed if Israel continues its airstrikes and attempts to rescue them by force.

In a statement on Wednesday, Hamas said it was “doing everything possible to keep the occupation’s captives alive, but the random Zionist (Israeli) bombardment is endangering their lives.”

The group further cautioned, “Every time the occupation attempts to retrieve its captives by force, it ends up bringing them back in coffins.”

The warning comes as Israel escalates military operations in the densely populated Gaza Strip, resuming heavy airstrikes and ground assaults last week following a period of relative calm under a January ceasefire.

According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, at least 830 Palestinians have been killed since the renewed offensive began. The ongoing conflict traces back to Hamas’s deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

In response, Israel launched a large-scale military campaign in Gaza that has, to date, resulted in at least 50,183 Palestinian deaths, with the majority being civilians, according to the health ministry.

The situation remains highly volatile, with international efforts for a ceasefire facing significant challenges.
