Akwa United delivered a statement performance, Sunday, to record a 0-2 win and claim the scalp of Kwara United in a matchday thirty fixture of the NPFL in front of a vociferous crowd at Kwara sports complex, Ilorin.
The away win, Akwa’s first of the campaign, propels them to sixteenth in the standings and out of the relegation zone by goal difference, with eight rounds of matches left before the end of the season.
Kwara United defender Segun Adekunle was shown a deserved red card in the twenty-fourth minute after he dragged back Uche Sabastian who had broken free one-to-one with only the goalkeeper at his mercy.
The visitors instantaneously made the numerical advantage count from the resultant free-kick when Osoba Kabir reacted quickest to tuck home his third of the season and open the scoring off the rebound following Ebedebiri’s thunderous shot which came back off the post two minutes after.
Akwa United’s goalkeeper Jean Efala put both his experience and artistry to good effect, churning out breathtaking saves whenever he was called upon to preserve his side’s lead and keep the home side at bay.
With the clock ticking and the hosts pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Akwa United exploited the gaps created at the rear, in the seventy-third minute, to seal the victory in spectacular fashion and complete the double over Kwara United. This time, Uche Sabastian reached at the end of a defence-splitting pass by Ibrahim Akande to put clear daylight between the sides and fire in his fifth in nine appearances since joining in mid-season.
Riding on the crest of a wave of three wins in their last four outings, the Promise Keepers will now move their attention to the visit of Niger Tornadoes to Godswill Akpabio Stadium this Wednesday, a win in which will put Akwa United’s destiny firmly in their own hands.
